Temporarily Traveling Out of Washington State
You can receive Personal Care from Washington’s long-term care programs while temporarily out of state:
- You coordinate your travel plans with your case manager before leaving
- Your Individual Provider (IP) is contracted and in good standing with CDWA
- Out-of-state services are strictly for client’s personal care and must not include IPs travel time or expenses
- Personal Care services must only be provided in the United States
Prior to leaving you will need to provide to your Case Manager:
- Your temporary out-of-state address and phone contact
- Discuss with your Case Manager how your personal care needs will be met while you are traveling out-of-state
- You must have a current CARE assessment and services authorized prior to departure
- Also advise CDWA of the dates you will be out-of-state, and that your IP (employed through CDWA) will be with them. The IP should also notify the CDE.
If you need to travel out of state for more than 30 days you must also:
- Maintain Medicaid eligibility per Health Care Authority (HCA) WAC 182-503-0520 residency requirement
- Provide in writing to your Case Manager your intent to return to Washington once the purpose of your absence has been accomplished. Include the dates you will be out of state.
- Prior to leaving the state, an ETR must be reviewed and approved
- During the time out of Washington State, you must not have been determined eligible for Medicaid or state funded health care coverage in another state (other than coverage in another state for incidental or emergency medical care)
- You and/or your representative must contact your Case Manager every 30 days while you are out of state to confirm that the CARE plan is meeting your needs.
You cannot receive personal care services outside of the United States. For more information on care programs while temporarily out of state visit the WAC at https://app.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=388-106-0035.
